What Size Tissue Box Cover Do I Need? A Complete Sizing Guide
Finding a tissue box cover you like is easy. Finding one that actually fits is where people give up. The good news is that tissue box sizing is far simpler than it looks, and once you know the trick you can buy the right cover in about thirty seconds.
Here's the short version: on rectangular boxes, the length and width barely change. Only the height does. Measure the height of your box and you're basically done.
The four tissue box sizes you'll actually encounter
Standard rectangular boxes
The most common format by a wide margin. Most Kleenex, Puffs, Scotties, and store-brand rectangular boxes measure roughly 8.875″ long by 4.75″ wide. That footprint is remarkably consistent across brands.
What changes is the height, and it changes based on how many tissues are packed inside:
- A 160-count box stands around 3.5″ tall
- A fuller 200 to 230 count box reaches around 4.6″ tall
That single inch of difference is why so many covers "almost" fit. Two boxes with an identical footprint can need two different covers.
Slim and low-profile rectangular boxes
Same footprint, but flattened. These sit around 2″ to 2.4″ tall and are common in travel packs and compact household boxes. A standard cover will swallow one of these with a visible gap underneath.
Cube and square boxes
The upright boxes that live on nightstands and bathroom counters. A standard Kleenex cube box measures about 4.5″ by 4.375″ and stands around 5″ tall. These need a square cover. Square and rectangular covers are not interchangeable in either direction.
Large boxes (Costco and Kirkland Signature)
The oversized boxes sold at warehouse clubs. Here's the part most guides get wrong: these are not dramatically longer or wider than a standard box. They sit on close to the same footprint. They're simply taller, in the 4″ to 4.7″ range.

How to measure your tissue box in thirty seconds
- Set the box on a flat counter.
- Measure from the counter to the top of the box. That's your height.
- If the box is cube-shaped, also measure the base.
- Match the number to the table below.
You don't need to measure the length on a rectangular box. Nearly all of them are the same, and it's not what determines fit.

Notice that the three rectangular covers share almost the identical footprint. Only the height changes. That's the whole system, and it's why height is the only measurement you need.
What to do when you're between sizes
Size up. A cover with a little extra headroom looks completely normal on a counter, and the box simply sits lower inside it with some empty space underneath that nobody can see. A cover that won't go over your box is just a return.
Some give is normal and expected. A cover has to slip on and off easily every time you swap boxes. What you want to avoid is a cover so loose the box slides around inside when you pull a tissue.
